Dietzsch (39) headed the world list with 68.06, and endorsed her position as favourite on her record ninth appearance in the championships by leading the qualifying round with 65.17. The champion from 1999 and 2005 opened up in the final with 66.61, which she followed with 66.48. Neither mark was headed on the day, though Pishchalnikova did (like Dietzsch) produce three throws over 65m. No-one else could get over 64m, and Barrios’s opening throw of 63.90 held up against Grasu, who achieved her best of 63.40 in the final round. Dietzsch had first competed internationally – for the GDR – in 1986, placing second in the World Junior championships. In winning, she became the first athlete to win the women’s discus three times and the second-oldest World Champion after 2001 winner Ellina Zvereva.
The following summer, Pishchalnikova was found guilty of tampering or attempting to tamper with a doping control sample back in April 2007. As detailed in the report here of the Osaka women’s 1500m, she was eventually banned from that date to April 30, 2011. So her Osaka silver went to Barrios, and Grasu won her third world medal.
